Many things: A tender red spot indicates inflammation or infection. It could be the result of a bone defect around a tooth, the beginning of a dental abscess, or a sliver of material caught under the gum. Best to have the area xrayed and diagnosed for the correct treatment.

Aphthous ulcer: Without examination it is hard to tell but sounds like an aphthous ulcer.It should get better on its own in 2-4 days but if it does not then seek medical help
