See your doctor: First get checked for a blood clot. This can cause leg swelling and is more likely when you can't get around due to a joint problem. If the problem is water/ fluid retention elevating the leg, decreasing salt in your diet, and support stockings can help. If the problem is the ankle joint you will need to see your doctor for treatment before surgery.

See a specialist.: See an orthopedic knee specialist, who can make a decision on aspirating (draining) the knee, possibly. the doctor may recommend physical therapy for strengthening.
