EMG can be helpful: The femoral nerve is formed from L2, L3 and L4 nerves that come out of lumbar spine. http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/peripheral-neuropathy/basics/definition/con-20019948 Pain in the thigh can come from lumbar spine even though you may not have back or hip pain. EMG can help determine in a peripheral nerve or lumbar nerve is irritated.

Spine vs Neuropathy: The cause of your pain may be a pinched nerve in the spine or around the thigh, especially if just on one side. It may also be neuropathy not due to compression (pinching), which usually is symmetric on both sides. A good neurologic exam by your doctor may be able to differentiate the source better.
