Palliative: In addition to avoid triggers, you can try and cover the area. A couple of simple ways are to get orthodontic wax (sold at most drug stores, ask for braces wax, very cheap) and smush a small ball into the area of missing tooth to provide a thermal cover. If that does not work, get a athletic mouth guard and cover the tooth along with the rest of the arch. While not the prettiest, it may work.
