Dental pain: It is a good thing that you have an appointment scheduled for your painful tooth. I am not certain what your question is but your assessment about needing a root canal is correct.

Likely need RCT: The fact that it is sensitive to hot as well as cold is indicative of an irreversible pulpitis (inflammation of the nerve) in most cases. You are correct in thinking that root canal therapy (RCT) may be needed. See the specialist - the Endodontist- who is specially trained in this treatment.Good Luck.

See a dentist ASAP: If you have a toothache, you may have a cavity or advanced gum disease. A tooth pain won't go away without treatment and the infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. You can use NSAID OTC or Tylenol (acetaminophen) for pain control. See a dentist ASAP for assessment.
