I have a tooth that is sensitive to heat, cold and air. dentist said there was nothing wrong in the x-rays. what could it be?

See below: It could be a cracked tooth, it could be a little recession that exposes the root surface which can be very sense. You may have a tooth that has pulpitis and this is not visible on radiograph. If it gets worse you likely will need root canal. If it is along the gum line then it is likely the recession issue and may get better. If concerned call your provider or get a second opinion. Good luck.

Pulp: It sounds like you have irreversible pulpitis. This means the nerve inside of your tooth is dying and will not recover. Sometimes this isn't evident on an x-ray. Ask your dentist for a referral to an endodontist.
