A member asked:

Can you tell me how the supporting cells of nervous tissue (e.g. schwann cells) differ from neurons?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Brief anatomy: The nerve is comprised of a central axon, and larger fibers have an insulation covering called myelin. In the peripheral nervous system, the Schwann cell produces and maintains the insulation. Integrity of the nerve cell within the spinal cord provides the nutrition to maintain axonal function.
