Go with a friend: Many people are nervous in large social situations especially whe there a lot of strangers. It's not necessary to talk to everyone. You can smile and use some prepared small talk. Have a good time and don't drink too much.

Nervous: Agree. Also, social anxiety is helped by distracting yourself & focusing on pleasant images or stimuli while silently doing breathing exercise. Will be glad to demonstrate technique if requested, by e-mail.
