A 46-year-old member asked:

can you please list a few otc medicine for nervousness?

Why use OTC med: The supplements that may say they can help with nervousness are not well tested. Speak with a psychiatrist or your primary care physician about medications that are proven to help. You could also start with psychotherapy to learn stress management techniques & if you need meds do that later.

A few: The first thing to do with nervousness is to discover why it's happening, and deal with that. Stop all stimulants, including caffeine.Breathing exercises, mindfulness meditation, and yoga are helpful practices. Depending on what other medications you're taking, some herbal medicines can be safe to try -- such as milky oats which is like nature's xanax (alprazolam). Passion flower, lemon balm, or kava too.

Cure for nerves: Anxiety is a normal part of being human, so there is no "cure". Many people can be taught ways to better manage their anxiety through cognitive and behaviorally oriented therapy. There are also anti-anxiety meds that are effective. You can be helped with psychiatric or psychological therapy.

NOT BY THE USUAL : Legal means. Anti anxiety meds require a licensed physician. There may be some homeopathic treatments available at your local health food store though, non prescription.

Homeopathic treatments for anxiety can definitely be helpful -- but for best results, a person needs individual homeopathic case-taking to find the most indicated remedy. Health food stores do not offer this kind of care.
