Good question: Patients should ask careful questions of their doctors and dentists anytime antibiotics are suggested before a medical or dental procedure. You need to have a wallet card provided by your cardiologist with instructions and regimens. Single dose 30-60 minutes before procedure Amoxicillin 2g. If allergic Clindamycin 600mg or Azithromycin 500mg.

Premedication: According to the latest guidelines, an Atrial Septal Defect is not one of the conditions normally requiring antibiotic prophylaxis. However, only your own dentist in consultation with your physician or cardiologist should make the determination whether or not it is required and if so, what antibiotic and what dosage\frequency is necessary based upon your medical\dental history and the procedure.
