That depends: It depends on how bad the abscess is. When a tooth has a bad abscess it is often impossible to get it adequately numb to allow treatment as the infection neutralizes the anesthetic. Often the patient will be placed on an antibiotic first to help shrink the abscess before starting treatment a few days later. A bad dental abscess can lead to life threatening complications. Don't wait.

Infection: Antibiotic will reduce severity of infection and will slow it's spread, but will NOT cure. Infected tooth material has to be removed. See Dentist now for appropriate treatment before the infection does damage to other organ systems.

Antibiotics: Antibiotics to not resolve dental issues, they only manage the infection until definitive care can be rendered, by a dentist. You daughter should have already established a good relationship with a local dentist. If not, call a pediatric dentist for an appointment.
