Growing Pains: In general, growing pains should not have any other associated signs or symptoms, such as joint swelling, redness, warmth, fever, or point-tenderness of the extremity. In addition, the pain should be relatively minor (it should not wake the child up at night, and it should not interfere with their normal activities throughout the day). If any of the above is present, see your pediatrician.

Pain that interferes: Growing pains are usually in the lower legs and not in one exact spot. The child will not limp and will play normal during the day. There is no swelling or bruising. If the pain causes limitation of normal activities during the daytime such as running or playing then it can be more serious. I also worry if it is located in one exact spot where they can point with one finger.
