Early diabetes: Your mom is i guess in late 40 s her fasting is 158 at highest and random is 180 mg/dl what is her hgaic my guess is below 7 there is evidence to suggest keeping her sugars will prevent further worsening also kidney, eye damage and maybe neuropathy coronary artery disease while not sure maybe postponed control could be by exercise and diet to maintain ideal body weight metformin could be used.

Does sugar cause diabetes?

No: Sugar by itself does not cause diabetes. Diabetes is the inability to metabolize sugar due to lack / resistance to insulin; the pancreas produce Insulin among other hormones which help in the metabolism of glucose (sugar); those who consume lots of sugar may cause their pancreas to over work and if they were prone to diabetes may develop the disease earlier. Obesity may cause resistance to insulin.

Does anyone have some suggestions for how to keep bloog sugar at normal levels when you have diabetes?

Yes: Be compliant with your treatment protocol: follow the proper diet, exercise regularly if you can, take your medications as prescribed and follow-up with your doctors at appropriate intervals. There is no cure for diabetes at this time but on a proper treatment regimen, it can be controlled and you can prevent development of complications.

Could anyone suggest a good cereal for a diabetics. Is there any cereals without added sugar?

There are many: If you are a diabetic, you would want a cereal with high fiber content. Some of the good ones (not all-inclusive) are: fiber one, kellogg's raisin bran or all-bran original, or my personal favorite kashi golean crunch.

My friend who is diabetic wants to know if ice cream with "no sugar added" is ok for diabetics?

Read the carb: It is not just about the sugar intake it is about the carb intake. That icecream is sugar free not carb free. Your friend may still have high sugars after eating this icecream and not to mention usually sugar free products have higher fat content.

Sort of: You increase your risk of getting diabetes when you gain weight. So too much if anything can do it.
