Shin Splints: Shin splints are a common overuse injury seen in runners. Pain is usually present on the medial (inner) part of the shin, is worse with exercise, and improves with rest. Prevention techniques include using appropriate shoes (properly fitting and not worn out), stretching prior to activity, and gradually increasing the length and intensity of running as tolerated (rather than all at once).
