Dental abscess: There is no set time and it won't clear up permanently anyway unless the issue that caused it in the first place is addressed. If you are referring to how long it takes for the pain or swelling to subside? That also varies depending upon the individual circumstances. If you are treating yourself, bad idea! if you are under the care of a dentist, he\she can best answer your questions.

It can vary: Dental abscesses can be due to a number of different causes and pathogens. Dental abscesses unfortunately do not all respond to one single antibiotic. The location of the abscess will also determine the type of antibiotic prescribed, route of administration, as well as whether or not surgical drainage of the abscess is indicated in conjunction with antibiotic therapy.

See a dentist: to drain the dental abscess. The infection may spread to your jaw, cheeks, sinus and to other areas of your head and neck. The antibiotics (Penicillin is the most common) will give you only a temporary relief. See your dentist for examination, x-rays and treatment.
