A gingival abscess is not due to hormonal changes related to your menstruation. An abscess is due to a bacterial infection, either from a periodontal issue or a necrotic tooth nerve. Your prescribing dentist examined you and determined what is causing your swelling. Antibiotics will control the infection until the issue itself is treated.

If the abscess is in the tooth than a root canal should be performed in order to save the tooth, with a crown done afterwards. If the tooth is not treated than a extraction will result, the antibiotics can not cure or solve your abscess, only control it for a while.
