Need exam: You need to be examined by an experienced orthopedic surgeon or hand surgeon.Ulnar collateral ligament injuries occur commonly @ the metacarpal- phalangeal joint( knuckle' joint of thumb)and can cause chronic instability, pain, and weakness esp.In athletes( football, skiing, etc).Examination of the affected joint and the 'normal' thumb should yield the diagnosis. Best of luck!
