A member asked:

In your opinion, do therapists make things worse?

Rarely: Anything that helps may have side effects. Therapy may uncover repressed memories with bad feelings. Sometimes this is unhelpful. Different types of therapy exist, with newer therapies focused on changing current behaviors and less need to bring up the past. Tell your therapist is you are getting worse and consider another opinion.

Temporarily: There is an experience that many psychologists and therapists have with their patients: 'it gets worse before it gets better.' that is, sometimes talking about hard and negative feelings, ideas, that have been suppressed can make the patient feel worse for a while before the subjective experience of healing begins. The good news is that you can be sharing with your therapist about this experience.
