Need more info: It's surprising that your friend waited 2 years to get any imaging studies. Without imaging studies his orthopedic surgeon can surely make an educated guess about what is wrong without an mri. Something lasting 2 years ; he has some ambulation albeit with a walker his problem is most likely;y an arthritic problem that may be helped with medication and/or physiotherapy.
