Absolutely OK: It is very safe to build muscle. If you haven't exercised in a long time, then work into it gradually. If you are lifting at a gym, work with others and they should help you gradually increase your weights and reps. If you are lifting at home, then ask a friend that lifts or google a program. Mildly sore muscles is a sign of a good workout. Use "day-on, day-off". Arms one day, legs the next.
