TESTING: An actual tear usually requires a pretty memorable event. Trauma or injury? Torn ligaments are diagnosed through a good history and physical, x-rays including what are called stress x-rays, and maybe an MRI. Sincerely, Dr. Latva

It Pays to know...: To say "know" denotes absolute certainty. Only the most severely torn ankle ligaments can be known for certain by exam only . The vast majority of the lesser ones need a MRI verification. Fortunately, this group of sprains are pretty much treated by the same methodology.
