Is it possible for a ophthalmologist to pick up on optic neuritis?

Optic neuritis : Symptoms of optic neuritis include vision loss, eye pain and loss of central or peripheral vision. Signs on exam include decreased visual acuity, abnormal pupil reaction, visual field loss and loss of color and contrast in the affected eye.
