Surgery sometimes: That would depend on where is the tear and how much it compromises flow to vital organs. If the tear is within the first few inches of the aorta taking off from the heart, emergent surgery is needed. If the tear is further downstream and does not compromise flow to vital organs then it may be treated with medications for pain/high blood pressure and watchful waiting.
