No: Although amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (lou gerig's disease) is marked by distruction of nerves and atrophy of muscles, the cause remains elusive. No link to polio has been made.

Good question: Als is a terrible disease that produces progressive loss of muscle strength. Etiology is still unknown. Polio is an acute disease that causes severe illness and can leave the patient with permanent muscle weakness. Chronic cases of polio may show progressive weakness similar to als. It is unclear why they are so similar.

Different causes: Both affect the motor nerve cell, but polio is an infectious disease, and ALS a disorder of uncertain etiology. There is no direct relationship otherwise.
