No surgery needed: An elevated TSH indicates that your thyroid is underactive. This is treated with thyroid replacment medication like thyroxine (synthroid). Surgery is not indicated in hypothyroidism. Your friends must have been hyperthyoid with an enlarged gland (goiter).
