Foot pain w/ running: Check your shoes as they may not fit right. Pain on top of foot that resolved with rest but then recurred suggests they may be too tight across that area or lack adequate cushioning. Consider visiting a retailer that specializes in running shoes.

No: The concern would be that you very well could have a stress fracture. But even if that we're the case, you are doing the right thing by resting it and then trying to gradually resume activities once symptoms improve. If it persists, consider being seen for an exam and x-ray.

New socks, shoes?: My personal experience having run dozens of marathons (five bostons) is that any recurring pain on the top of the foot may be the result of running shoe wear or possible "bunching" irritation of socks. I would rest for a longer period of time and/or try new shoes and socks. If that doesn't work, i would contact a sports medicine group and/or a physical therapist.
