A member asked:

I saw a gi doc that said a gagging feeling in lower throat when bending over is not a symptom of a hiatal hernia (which i have). would you agree?

Maybe GERD: Agreed. Of the 70 million americans with reflux, about half have symptoms without esophageal inflammation. Some may have gagging, cough, hoarseness. Perhaps behavior ; diet modification (answered previously on healthtap) may help if gerd is present, but my best recommendation is to follow your GI doc's advice. Afterall, he knows you best ; what your tests have shown. If questions, ask him please.

Probably: There is a sensation that many patients describe as something bein stuck in their throat, or a lump on the throat. Very common, and likely related to sensory input to the brain. Also called globus sensation. Not sure if that's the same as your describing, but likely unrelated to hiatal hernia.
