Reflux: If you look at the picture you will see that the swallowing tube is above the diaphragm and the stomach is below. The stomach is full of acid to digest food and is lined with mucous to protect it from the acid. The esophagus has no acid or protection. A hiatal hernia is part of the stomach above diaphragm which leaks acid into the esophagus. Sounds like your problem. ie acid reflux.
