Mechanical...: Sounds like you may have a mechanical problem with the wrists. We place our wrists in all sorts of positions when we sleep and can develop carpal tunnel or carpal tunnel like problems. Try sleeping in carpal tunnel splints for a couple of weeks.

Varies: There are a lot of possibilities, including arthritic, inflammatory, and nerve compression syndromes. I would not hesitate to be seen for an accurate diagnosis.

Hands swell: Hands swell when one sleeps due to fluid redistribution when lying down and inactivity. Activity such as make no a fist and contracting hand muscles helps to limit hand swelling.
