An initial fracture is extra articular but in later ct shows it extending into the joint why would this be?

Propagation: Fractures can propagate from extra articular to intra articular during the post-traumatic period if they are subjected to untoward stresses. The bone fragments require 21 or more days to get "sticky" so that some internal stability is present. Also, if the initial read of extra articular was based on an x-ray, this is a less sensitive exam than a ct, so it just may not have been visible on x-ray.
