Go to the ER: Assuming you did not injury the ankle. This could indicate an infection of the ankle. It is advised to go to the er and be evaluated and they can determine how to proceed at that point.

Could be a few: Things, from infection to a synovitis. As the other doctor said, if you have a fever or chills or just are feeling sick, go to the er in case it's an infection. If you've had a ct, you're probably under a doctor's care. Pulling out the fluid and sending it for a culture and analysis would give you the diagnosis. Ct visualizes bone better than an mri, but an MRI sees soft tissue better. Bone scan?
