Benadryl (diphenhydramine) HCl 25 mg: Benadryl (diphenhydramine) in that dose is an effective dose for many patients with insomnia, but it could be too low for most of them. Usually 50 mg or 100 mg of Diphenhydramine (generic name for benadryl) are needed for a good night sleep. The usual dose for melatonin are 3 mg - 6 mg one to two hours before bedtime. There are personal variations in the dose of medications and herbs to induce and maintain sleep.

Careful with symbols: I am commenting on this question due to the error i spotted which someone could take literally and make a serious mistake believing that 25mg hcl can be used as a sleep aid. I believe you're trying to say Diphenhydramine as the hydrochloride salt, or diphenydramine hcl is a sleep aid. "hcl" as you state could be misread as hydrochloric acid...Quite different. Definitely not a sleep aid.
