A member asked:

How long does it take for hiv to show up in a baby, if he caught the virus from the mother?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Show up?: Not sure what you mean by "show up". It may be capable of being diagnosed rapidly (within days) if a PCR for viral RNA is done on the baby's blood. Whether it will produce rapid changes in the baby's immune processes is quite variable. Antibody testing should wait for some weeks after baby is borne since they may be carrying the mother's antibodies and the time for clearance is variable.
