Cilia: Cilia beat in a coordinated manner to move airway secretions such as mucus in the respiratory tract, sinuses and ear passages. There are several ways the cilia can be damaged, including exposure to cigarette smoke. Once smoking is stopped, the cilia may recover. Avoiding secondhand smoke is also important. Harsh chemicals when inhaled can potentially injure the cilia as well.
