A member asked:

Bilirubin is -> 1.3 if i was fasting and did not have a drink or food for 13 hrs could this be the cause for elevation? everything else is normal.

That's normal: In my book, anyway. Fasting will raise it some; you're correct. If it tends to go higher, you may have gilbert's non-disease. The reference ranges are set so that several percent of healthies fall high. My bilirubin topped 2.0 after i fell and bruised my butt running, and there are other causes of trivial hyperbilirubinemia.

Need more testing: Gilbert’s syndrome is due to deficiency of an enzyme that helps to excrete bilirubin. It is usually diagnosed between the ages of 15 and 30 years. Patients with gilbert’s syndrome are prone to develop jaundice from time to time. The risk increases with fasting, dehydration, repeated and profuse vomiting, infections, exertion and stress and after a surgery. If uncertain, specific tests can be done.
