May not need solids: If a normal 4 month-old baby is hungry soon after breast or formula feeding, he can be fed again. Solid foods can be started at 6 months, but if really wanting to try solids sooner, rice cereal can be tried at 4 months. If a baby eats cereal fine and poops don't harden, he should be ok. If he doesn't want to eat the solid food, just try again in a month (unless he has a medical need for solids).

Its ok but...: Try adding a starch or grain to increase palatability. Sugar is also present in rice cereal and simple starches and may be used to help with accepting the texture. Infants are not usually selective about taste, if you ever tasted formula....This would make sense.

No: Most babies are ready for solid foods between 4-6 months, when he can hold up his head well and isn't being satisfied with milk. Start with the rice cereal, mixed with a little formula or breast milk. He may only take a few bites- that's okay. Don't rush. If he won't take it after a few tries, wait a couple of weeks and try again. Then move to veggies. No sugar or other seasonings.

No sugar: I would not put sugar in the food. It's better for your son to get used to the way food tastes without the added sugar. Babies can be picky at first and sometimes you have to keep offering a food repeatedly before they learn to like the flavor. It's ok to try a different food for a while and then go back to peas. Eating food is new for him and you. Just give him time.

Sugar for baby: Do not add sugar to baby food, as sugar is unhealthy. Try carrots or plums which would be naturally sweeter.

American Academy of : Pediatrics' guidelines found on Healthy Chidren.org : start iron & zinc-fortified cereal in a 4-6 mos., 14-16 lb. infant who takes over 32 oz. formula/ 24 hrs. & has enough upper body strength to turn toward food when hungry & turn away when full. Offer cereal 1-2 times /day; respect baby's food cues. Start meats at/after 6 mos. then fruits & vegetables, no juice, sugary or fatty foods.
