Unusual: In the absence of head injury or stroke, or alcohol usage, it is unusual to have new onset seizures at the age of 53. This needs to be worked up to make certain that there is not an underlying brain tumor as the cause. A ct scan or an MRI scan are useful to help to determine if there is a brain tumor.

Actually not rare: New cases of epilepsy happen very frequently as we age. After age 65 the rate of new cases especially shoots up. Causes vary quite a lot over the different ages. Older folks have a higher incidence due to trauma, strokes, and degenerative diseases. Occasionally tumors, too.
