Greatly: The child should be given an age appropriate explanation and may need counceling to deal with feelings of guilt and rejection for the rest of his life.

It would likely be: Devastating. Children have imaginary thinking and often believe that bad things that occur are somehow their fault. It would leave a vacuum in the child's life that might not be filled again.
