Smoking: Do not smoke for at least 24 hours following an extraction. Smoking can cause healing problems such as painful dry socket. It will generally slow down the healing process. Consider quitting. You will feel much better.

Slowed healing: Smoking slows down healing in the entire body. The slow down is even more pronounced in the mouth due to the particulates and heat of the smoke. In general, the healing time doubles in a pack a day smoker. A good rule of thumb for the entire mouth to heal after getting all of the teeth removed is 30 days without being a smoker. The gum and bony changes continue for up to a year.
