Osteoarthritis (OA): I imagine that you've spent a good portion of your life working with your hands? Given your age & the time you spent painting, especially if other family members have (had) OA, you are at risk. Alternatively, if you held the brush awkwardly, you could have what's called "skier's thumb", "gamekeeper's thumb" or "catcher's thumb" with a ligament sprain that doesn't show on X-ray.
