If so then a comprehensive evaluation with review medical history, x-rays, photos intraoral extra oral postural, mounted models, palpating of muscles, range of motion measurements are in order to get a diagnosis in order to determine what dirrection to proceed. TMJ Dentist: Find a dentist that has advanced training in tmd. Tmj dysfunction is a symptom of another unresolved and very often undiagnosed condition within the mouth. It is usually caused by a bite imbalance that most people don't even know they have because it only manifests itself while sleeping. This imbalance causes the jaw muscles to contract putting strain on the tmj. Treatment is not painful.

Depends: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain ; limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, otc pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments.
