Please explain why does lotion sting if you put it on when your skin is particularly dry?

Stinging: Overly dry skin is not as good a barrier against preservatives or chemicals in lotions or other products (as compared to skin that is more intact). As a result, some of these may get through to more sensitive areas of tissue/skin.
