Depends on variables: Facial and palatal structures form over the 5th-10th weeks and clefting in either or both structures is evident during this process. Depending on the skill and equipment of the ultrasound tech, the cleft lip and palate may be seen. A cleft lip can occur without a cleft palate as can the opposite. Some minor clefting is hard to detect until delivery.

Clefting: Clefting occurs during the mid to latter half of the 1st trimester. If cleft of lip and/or palate occurs there are marvelous cleft teams at most children's hospitals to address the issue. It's possible to see on an ultra-sound, but only if the baby's head is in exactly the right position. If you are concerned, talk to your Obstetrician.
