A member asked:

6 weeks pregnant. been taking lamotrigine 50 mg since mid february. could my baby already developed a cleft lip/pallate? at this early in pregnancy?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Unlikely: While many anti-epileptic drugs do have an increased risk of birth defects, Lamictal has not yet been shown to have any issues despite extensive testing. Do also keep in mind that seizures themselves are harmful to the fetus, and continuing your medication is critical. I would highly recommend seeing your neurologist on a regular basis during your pregnancy to make sure that blood levels are ok.
