Should i be concerned if my 20 week ultrasound detected a cleft lip on our baby. has anyone else experienced this?

Not uncommon: Cleft lip is one of the most common congenital defects occurring in 1:700 live births. It is very treatable by surgical means and most children are able to live full lives. Your doctor should be able to refer you to support groups for parents in this position. It is an advantage to know about the condition before the child is born so plans can be made.

Visit cleft doctor: If the cleft was found on ultrasound, then this means the baby has a cleft lip, and maybe cleft palate. The cleft palate can rarely be seen on ultrasound. You should visit with the coordinator or team leader of your local cleft team to get all the information you want. You can find a local cleft team through the american cleft palate association (or cleft palate foundation) online.
