Wisdom tooth ext: You are probably feeling the edge of the bony socket. This will eventually be covered over by gum tissue once the socket heals and is filled in. Make sure you return to the dentist/surgeon for a post-op visit to have the area and the healing checked.

Pain or high temp?: Pain, elevated temp, or purulent discharge are more hallmarks of infection. It is very normal to feel the bone on the edge of the socket after an extraction but you should resist the urge to play with the socket with your tongue or finger initially. Rinsing with warm salt water should be started after waiting for 24 hours so that the blood clot is in place long enough for healing to begin.
