Not necessarily: While the scab helps protect the area, loss of that scab does not automatically doom you to problems. It has to come out sometime! Follow all the instructions you were given to avoid dry socket, such as NO smoking, no drinking through straws, etc. Keep your mouth clean - swish gently with a DILUTED antibacterial mouthwash such as Listerine. Make sure to keep yourself healthy with plenty of rest.

Not necessarily: The more days that have passed since the surgery, the less the risk of complications. Follow your Oral Surgeon's oral and written instructions to the letter. If pain level,ls increase, if there is bad smell or foul taste, if you have any questions, call your Oral Surgeon. (S)he knows your pre-surgical status, the difficulty of the surgery, and is responsible for your post-surgical care.
