Possibly torus: You may have torus palatinus, but this is a mere suggestion without seeing it. It needs to be looked at for clear diagnosis. A primary care doc or a dentist needs to be consulted.

Abcesses: It sounds like you may have an abcess. The fact that your tooth is discolored is consistent with this finding. The tooth may be non-vital ("dead"), and the pain and sponginess may be due to the abcess enlarging and the pus attempting to exit from under the tissues that cover the hard palate. Contact your dds as soon as possible and keep the area clean. Warm salt water rinses should help today.

Palatal abscess?: From what you describe the most likely diagnosis would be an abscess from that tooth due to the death of the pulpal tissue and resultant spread of infection to the palate. These things can flare up and cause severe pain and swelling and do downhill very quickly. A visit to your dentist for a proper diagnosis and treatment would be a smart and prudent move.
