A member asked:

Can you tell me about life of patients with ascites and liver cirrhosis of grade iv?

A doctor has provided 1 answer
Dr. Myron Arlen answered

Specializes in Surgical Oncology

Patients with liver cirrhosis develop many complications since the presence of ascites means that there is portal hyperteinsion in the venous system draining the bowel with nutrients heading to the liver. Such patients can go into liver failure and coma or develop complications from portal hypertension such as esophageal varices. A shunt has to be performed to lessen or eliminate the problem.
