Yes: A Lidocaine gel may work better than a cream.

Suggest focusing on feeling of "pressure." also try this technique: http://bit.Ly/1gqtfqb | 3-5% of ppl thought 2 have a needle phobia-"trypanophobia." it prevents many from seeking medical/dental care. It's unlike other phobias: most cause heart rate ; BP 2 rise + feelings of panic. Trypanophobia causes heart rate ; BP 2 fall + feeling faint.

CBT: Seek a cognitive-behavioral therapist who specializes in phobias. One method they use is systematic desensitization which slowly and incrementally brings the person closer and closer to the thing they are afraid of in slow, graduated steps that help make the anxiety more tolerable.
